Carragher deletes tweet about Howard Webb after referee boss spotted on phone during Arsenal star Saliba’s red card VAR

JAMIE CARRAGHER quickly deleted a tweet about Howard Webb after William Saliba was shown a red card during Arsenal’s match against Bournemouth.

The incident occurred in the first half when a misplaced pass from Leandro Trossard put William Saliba in difficulty.

The ball reached Evanilson, near the halfway line, who was ready to charge at it.

But the French defender was seen pulling the arm of the Brazilian who fell.

Initially, referee Rob Jones showed Saliba a yellow card, before a VAR check prompted the official to watch the incident on a screen.

As the VAR check was underway, the cameras zoomed in on Webb watching the match from the stands.

The ex-referee was seen on his phone as VAR Jared Gillett analyzed the incident.

Following a review, Saliba’s card was changed from yellow to red by Jones.

The moment prompted a Sky Sports pundit to speak to X to reveal his thoughts.

Carragher wrote: “Was Howard Webb involved in the decision making regarding Saliba’s red card??”

However, the football expert quickly retracted his statement by deleting his tweet.

As for Webb, he simply listens to communications from match officials – from the team on the pitch and when the VAR team engages with them.

The audio between VAR and on-field officials is the same that all broadcasters can listen to.

He has absolutely no opportunity to speak to any of the officials, as per standard protocol when management/coaches attend games.

This means Saliba will only be banned for ONE match.

This is because it was not violent behavior, which results in a three-match suspension.

Some fans suggested Evanilson was offside.

But one posted: “No, the referee made the right call after the VAR review to send off Saliba after he beat Evanilson, the last man and had a clear run to goal.

“For anyone who would question ‘offside’, Trossard played the ball in this scenario.”

The Gunners, in bad shape, were beaten 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium.
