Authorities confirmed Payne died after 5 p.m. at the Casa Sur hotel in the Palermo neighborhood on Costa Rica Street. An employee called for help for a guest who was “under the influence of drugs and alcohol and who had destroyed some items in the room.”

Buenos Aires police said they found Payne’s hotel room “in disarray” with “various broken items.” Packets of clonazepam (commonly sold under the brand name Klonopin and acts as a central nervous system depressant), energy supplements and other over-the-counter medications were found scattered among his belongings, according to the Associated Press. His body was then transferred to the Judicial Morgue, where an autopsy was carried out between 9:45 p.m. and 11:05 p.m. Forensic doctors requested histopathological, biochemical and toxicological analyzes.

“At this point, analysis of stomach contents, alcohol and blood toxins, vitreous humor, bile, nasal swab and urine was necessary to determine alcohols and toxins,” the report said.

They also noted that “the craniocerebral injuries were sufficiently adequate to cause death, while internal and external hemorrhages of the skull, thorax, abdomen, and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death.”

Upon investigation of Payne’s hands, no defensive injuries were confirmed.
