Inmate pleads guilty to 2022 attack on MCI-Shirley corrections officer

An inmate pleaded guilty Friday to charges of mayhem and armed assault with intent to murder in a 2022 attack on a correctional officer at MCI-Shirley, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced.

Roy Booth, 42, was accused of attacking Officer Matthew Tidman with a metal pole at the medium security prison on August 31, 2022. Middlesex Superior Court Judge Catherine Ham sentenced Booth on Friday to 13 to 15 years in prison at MCI-Souza-Baranowski. , the state’s maximum security prison.

Authorities say Booth took the metal pole from the MCI-Shirley weight room during recess and attacked Tidman from behind. Booth continued to beat Tidman with the pole until he was restrained by other corrections officers, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office said.

In a statement Friday, Ryan said the “brutal attack” on Tidman “highlights the dangers that law enforcement, particularly corrections officers, face in their daily work.”

“No one should have to fear for their life in their workplace,” Ryan said. “Thankfully, Prison Officer Tidman, after suffering horrific injuries, and against all odds, survived this terrifying attack. »

Booth is currently serving a life sentence for murder in Virginia, Ryan’s office said. He had been transferred from Virginia to a Massachusetts prison in 2021, and was transferred again to a Virginia state prison after the Tidman attack, the release said.

Ryan’s office said Booth’s sentence for the attack would be served consecutively to his life sentence in Virginia.
