Boston Children’s Health Doctors Announce Vendor Data Breach Affecting Patients, Employees | Console and related, PC

On October 4, 2024, Boston Children’s Health Physicians (“BCHP”) filed a data breach notification with the Massachusetts Attorney General after discovering that an unauthorized third party had accessed its network. In this notice, BCHP explains that the incident allowed an unauthorized party to access sensitive consumer information, including their names, social security numbers, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, case numbers medical, health insurance information, billing information and treatment information. Once its investigation was completed, BCHP began sending data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What caused the data breach affecting doctors at Boston Children’s Health?

The Boston Children’s Health Physicians data breach was only recently announced and more information is expected in the near future. However, BCHP’s filing with the Massachusetts Attorney General provides important information about what led to the violation. According to this source, on September 6, 2024, a vendor used by BCHP informed BCHP that there was unusual activity within its computer network.

A few days later, on September 10, 2024, BCHP detected unauthorized activity in parts of its own network. In response, BCHP secured its systems and then launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts. Through this investigation, BCHP confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access its network on September 10, 2024. It was later determined that the unauthorized party had access to certain files and folders containing confidential information belonging to employees current and former, patients and guarantors.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was being accessed by an unauthorized party, doctors at Boston Children’s Health reviewed the compromised files to determine what information had been disclosed and which consumers were affected. Although the information disclosed varies among individuals, it may include your name, social security number, address, date of birth, driver’s license number, medical records number, health insurance information, your billing information and processing information.

On October 4, 2024, doctors at Boston Children’s Health Physicians sent data breach letters to anyone affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of their information that has been compromised.
