Vice President Rigathi Gachagua has exposed explosive allegations of corruption and intimidation in a new court case as he fights to block his impeachment by the Senate.

In a comprehensive 57-page petition filed before the High Court, Gachagua paints a disturbing picture of a political system rife with corruption, coercion and manipulation.

His document lays out a series of allegations that seek not only to challenge his impeachment, but also to expose the underlying power dynamics in Kenyan politics.

At the heart of his petition are accusations of corruption and manipulation within the National Assembly during his impeachment proceedings.

Gachagua’s legal team, led by lead lawyer Paul Muite, reveals that a Rift Valley MP coordinated a scheme to bribe his colleagues to vote in favor of his impeachment on Tuesday night.

Although Gachagua did not name the MPs or reveal how much each received, he insists that many lawmakers were intimidated into compliance, creating an atmosphere of fear within Parliament.

He said if monetary incentives didn’t work, those who didn’t toe the line were under threat.

“Many other parliamentarians who expressed solidarity with Gachagua informed him that they had been threatened and intimidated into voting in favor of the motion, feeling powerless to resist under the circumstances. Others were allegedly offered financial incentives coordinated by a North Rift MP,” Muite said in court documents.

The petition also reveals that, as part of the campaign of fear and intimidation, several staff members of the Vice President’s office were arrested and only enjoyed their freedom thanks to a court order obtained just before the filing of the request for dismissal of the MP for Makueni. Mwengi Mutuse.

Intimidation campaign

The vice president says that during the impeachment proceedings in the National Assembly, the vast majority of MPs appeared to rally around a different agenda than that officially presented by Mutuse.

“It appears that many MPs did not meaningfully contribute to the motion presented; instead, they seemed to be promoting a distinct, politically motivated agenda,” says Gachagua.

“The impeachment exercise was designed to please the president rather than examine constitutional violations,” Gachagua asserts.

Additionally, Gachagua claims that public participation data allegedly collected by the National Assembly to support his impeachment was falsified.

He claims the statistics were manipulated to create the illusion of mass support among Kenyans for his impeachment, which he says is a direct violation of the principles of transparency and fairness. “The process must reflect the voice of the people, not a fabricated narrative,” Gachagua says, noting that some constituencies have reported numbers that defy logical scrutiny.

Among its specific allegations, the DP cites a particularly dubious claim from the Keiyo South constituency, where it claims that the data reported for its impeachment exceeded the possible threshold.
