Woman pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter in death of boyfriend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A woman pleaded guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend in east Bakersfield three years ago, according to court records.

Cony Alvarado-Romero, 33, had three other charges — including first-degree murder — dismissed as part of the plea deal, records show. Sentencing is set for next month.

On November 17, 2021, Jose Luis Hernandez Laureano, 30, was shot and killed on Latham Street. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he was pronounced dead.

According to court documents, Alvarado-Romero told police she shot Laureano after a fight. She alleged that Laureano assaulted her and that she fired once in his direction as he walked away.

Alvarado-Romero was not injured, police said in the documents. An autopsy showed a bullet entered the back of Laureano’s left shoulder, struck his lungs then exited through the center of his chest, according to reports.
