Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence develops and overcomes challenges every week

JACKSONVILLE – Another week, another step forward.

He protects the ball and throws with precision. He regularly hits deep passes, making big plays – and especially to quarterback Trevor Lawrence – the Jaguars in recent weeks have won more than they have lost.

It’s been a good few weeks – and a good feeling as the Jaguars return to Jacksonville.

“I definitely feel like I played better,” he said.

Lawrence, who has thrown nine touchdowns and three interceptions this season, has completed 66 of 89 passes (74.16 percent) for 798 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions over the past three games. He completed 65 of 122 (53.28 percent) for 729 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in the first four games.

“From an individual standpoint, I think I’ve played better the last few weeks,” Lawrence said. “There’s some correlation between that and the increase in completion percentage. I think some of our shots the last couple of weeks have been really good.

“I feel like I’ve seen things right. I feel like I’ve been pretty accurate over the last few weeks, I’ve corrected a few things, and I also feel like as “On offense, we’re kind of settling in and it’s just been going a little bit smoother, so it’s been going well.”

Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk said Lawrence’s recent performance was hardly surprising.

“That’s what’s expected of him,” Kirk said. “He’s always been that player. Even in times of adversity, he’s always been that player. I keep saying, ‘We’ll go as far as he takes us.’ When he is at his best we are really good and hard to beat.

“It’s great to see him playing the way he is and I know he will continue to do so. If he does, we will be in a good position to be able to win football games.”

A particular area of improvement for Lawrence this season: Reducing turnovers, a major issue of the offseason.

Lawrence, through seven games this season, has three giveaways – three interceptions and no lost fumbles. He led the NFL in giveaways during his first three seasons with 60 to 21 lost fumbles and 39 interceptions.
