Council Bluffs man found guilty of killing two Omaha men

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) – The Council Bluffs man arrested for the murders of two Omaha men was found guilty Monday.

Dequanta Zachary, 30, of Council Bluffs, was convicted by a Pottawattamie County jury of two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery and one count of felony possession of a firearm , said a press release on Tuesday. .

First-degree murder carries a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole in Iowa, first-degree robbery carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, and felony Possession of a firearm is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Zachary’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 5.

“I am pleased to bring some comfort to the families of Deonte and Michael and to have brought their killer to justice.” ” Pottawattamie County Prosecutor Matt Wilber said in the release.

Zachary was convicted in the death of Deonte Ivory, 36; and Michael Anderson, 25, both of Omaha.

CBPD received a call from a man in the 2100 block of South 29th Street around 12:20 a.m. Officers arrived to find Ivory deceased. Hours later, just after 7 a.m., officers responded to a call of a second man in the 3200 block of South 24th Street. Anderson was found deceased. Autopsies performed on both men revealed that they died from gunshot wounds.

CBPD says they were able to identify a suspicious vehicle, which was later recovered in Mills County. The investigation also revealed that the three men were associates. Detectives found Zachary in Blair on Monday; Blair police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office helped take him into custody.

Zachary was initially jailed on an outstanding arrest warrant from Council Bluffs for a first-degree theft charge. The CBPD presented the case to the Pottawattamie County Prosecutor’s Office and the aforementioned charges were filed.

Zachary is being held at the Pottawattamie County Jail.
