British man dies after falling from bridge in Spain while trying to ‘create content’

A British national has died after falling from a bridge in central Spain while trying to create content for social media, according to local authorities.

A 26-year-old man, whose identity has not been revealed, attempted to scale the 200-meter-high Castilla-La Mancha bridge in Talavera de la Reina, a statement from a local councilor said on Sunday .

Macarena Munoz, a city councilor responsible for citizen security, said the man was joined by a 24-year-old British man, also unnamed, and that the two men had gone to the bridge to create social media content.

In a statement, she said: “We were able to discover that they came to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social media, which led to this unfortunate and sad outcome.”

She added that attempting to climb the bridge “is completely prohibited and what we have repeatedly reiterated cannot be done under any circumstances.”

The man’s body was removed and taken to a funeral home by a coroner, according to a press release from the local council.

The Castilla-La Mancha Bridge stands over the Tagus River, about 120 km southwest of Madrid, and was inaugurated in 2011.

At the time, it was known for being the highest cable-stayed bridge in Spain.

The structure includes 152 metal cables attached to the main concrete towers, creating a fan-like shape.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
