Despite Mets’ Magical Season, ‘Important’ Changes Coming This Offseason

David Stearns’ overhaul of the New York Mets is only just beginning.

Although the Mets will add talent this offseason and face free agent decisions on up to 13 of their players, the roster won’t be the only area different next season.

According to Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic in an article published Tuesday, Stearns will also continue the overhaul behind the scenes.

Under the leadership of President David Stearns, the organization is expected to undergo significant internal changes, replacing and restructuring more than 20 positions during his second full season at the helm.

Ghiroli’s story dove into Yankees star Juan Soto’s free agency and why a World Series won’t dictate his decision — because the Mets are standing in the way with owner Steve Cohen’s wallet and their rise.

Despite the Mets’ surprising year that took them to Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, it’s clear the organization isn’t completely structured to Stearns’ liking — and he has the autonomy to get there. achieve.

Several internal moves have been reported this season.

Stearns fired at least 10 scouting department employees (international, amateur and professional), including director of scouting Steve Barningham, who had been with the Mets since 2005, according to Metsminors.net in August. On the international side, this also included John Hendricks, the supervisor of launcher evaluation and development. On the amateur side, this included Mike Ledna (regional supervisor), Joe Oliver (catch evaluation scout) and regional scouts Joe Raccuia, Nelson Mompierre and Rich Morales. On the pro side, Tony DeFrancesco, Rudy Terrasas and Ash Lawson were fired.

SNY reported later in August that Elizabeth Benn, the highest-ranking woman to ever work in Mets baseball operations, would leave at the end of the season. Benn was the team’s director of major league operations and had been in New York since 2022.

Before the season, Stearns added Eduardo Brizuela as vice president and special assistant to the president of baseball operations, Andy Green as senior vice president of baseball operations and Kris Gross as vice president of amateur scouting, among others.
