Former Jackson police officer pleads not guilty to murder charge

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The former Jackson police officer accused of murdering a man earlier this year has been indicted by a Hinds County grand jury.

Marcus Johnson was charged with first-degree murder and shooting into a dwelling. He pleaded not guilty on October 8, 2024.

Man convicted in fatal shooting at Canton family reunion

Johnson was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Carlos Collins, 25, at Tapestry Apartments on April 9. Johnson was captured in Louisiana on April 10 after a pursuit from Vicksburg. The chase began on Interstate 20.

According to Detective Tommie Brown, Johnson worked for the Jackson Police Department (JPD) for eight months in 2013. He was separated from JPD pending disciplinary action leading to his immediate termination. Brown said Johnson resigned just before he was fired.

Johnson’s trial is scheduled for March 10, 2025.
