What caused the H&R Block data breach?

The H&R Block data breach was only recently announced and more information is expected in the near future. However, H&R Block’s filing with the Texas Attorney General provides important information about what led to the breach. According to this source, on August 9, 2024, H&R Block learned that an unauthorized party was using information obtained from sources other than H&R Block to obtain access to information associated with certain customers’ accounts or MyBlock accounts. The period of unauthorized access would be between August 5, 2024 and August 7, 2024.

In response to the incident, H&R Block began working with third-party data security experts to conduct an investigation. Through this investigation, H&R Block confirmed that the unauthorized party was able to access confidential information belonging to certain individuals.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was being accessed by an unauthorized party, H&R Block reviewed the compromised files to determine what information had been disclosed and which consumers were affected. H&R Block recently completed this process. Although the information disclosed varies among individuals, it may include your name, social security number, financial account information, driver’s license number, and date of birth.
