President Johnson Says Time for US, Israel to Take on Iran: ‘Head of the Snake’

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the United States should help Israel with a “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.

Johnson made the comment during a Sunday morning appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with host Jake Tapper. The speaker told Tapper that Iran is the “head of the snake” and that fighting proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas won’t get the job done.

“We are on the precipice, I think, Jake, of a new era of security and freedom for Israel. And I think we are very close, I hope, I pray, to ending this conflict. “But we cannot procrastinate. We cannot appease Iran,” Johnson said.

“Now is the time for a maximum pressure campaign against the head of the snake. It is not Hezbollah, Hamas and their proxies that ultimately constitute the threat. It is Iran itself, and I think we need to recognize that reality now,” he said. added.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday called for a “maximum pressure campaign” against Iran.

The comments come as Israel is expected to launch a retaliatory strike against Iran in response to the massive wave of missiles launched by Tehran and its allies at Israel on October 1.

Israel’s UN Ambassador: Response to Iran will be ‘very painful’

Tapper asked Johnson if there was any action Israel could take that would be too drastic a response.

“It’s not my place to question their strategy or try to micromanage it,” Johnson said. “I think we’re hurting the overall cause if that’s our position. And I think that’s what the Biden-Harris administration has tried to do too many times along the way. They’ve held back the systems of arms, when Congress, in a bipartisan manner, duly decreed that these things would be provided.”

Johnson went on to say that tensions in the Middle East constitute a “conflict between good and evil” and that American support must always remain with Israel.

Johnson’s appearance comes as the United States investigates the unauthorized release of classified documents relating to Israel’s retaliation plans.

The documents, attributed to the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, note that Israel was still moving military assets in place to carry out a military strike in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack on October 1. They were shareable within the “Five Eyes”, which are the United States, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
