Bail set for Katrina Baur and Jesse Vang in Elijah Vue death charges


Elijah’s mother, Katrina Baur, was also ordered to have no contact with Jesse Vang or any child under the age of 18.

MANITOWOC – Jesse Vang and Katrina B. Baur will remain in custody at the Manitowoc County Jail after both attending a bail hearing Oct. 18 for their new charges in the death of 3-year-old Elijah Vue.

Manitowoc County Court Commissioner Patricia Koppa acknowledged that she set higher bails for Vang and Baur, even though neither was able to meet their respective $20,000 cash bails. $ and $15,000.

Baur, Elijah’s 31-year-old mother, now has a $400,000 cash bond on the condition that she have no contact with Vang or any child under 18. She received the same terms when her $15,000 cash bond was set in her previous contract. case, but Judge Robert Dewane later modified the condition so that she could supervise contact with her daughter.

Baur was charged with chronic neglect of a child resulting in death, neglect of a child and obstructing an officer. These charges are in addition to charges filed in February, which included chronic neglect of a child, two counts of obstructing an officer and one count of neglect of a child.

A $500,000 cash bond was set for Vang, 39, who was in a relationship with Baur at the time of Elijah’s death. He is also subject to conditions that he will have no contact with Baur and no contact with a child under the age of 18. He was charged with physical abuse of a child – repeated acts causing death, concealing a dead body and obstructing an officer. These charges are in addition to the chronic child neglect charge filed in February.

If convicted of causing Elijah’s death, Vang faces spending the rest of his life in prison.

Vang and Baur were scheduled to make their first appearance on Oct. 21 on the new charges.

Elijah was reported missing by Vang on February 20. After nearly seven months of police and community searches, the boy’s remains were found Sept. 7 on private property a little more than three miles from Vang’s apartment in Two Rivers.

The new charges against Vang and Baur were announced Oct. 17 during a news conference with the Two Rivers Police Department and Manitowoc County Prosecutor Jacalyn LaBre.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation that has shaken our community,” LaBre said at the conference. “My thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Elijah’s family, who are enduring unimaginable pain. … Our priority has always been to ensure a fair and just process, and today’s announcement reflects our commitment to uphold the law and seek justice for Elijah.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement found a suitcase that Vang gave to St. Vincent de Paul on Feb. 19 that contained Elijah’s DNA. They also found Elijah’s blanket in a wooded area near Johnston Drive and Goodwin Road, near Two Rivers.

The complaint also stated that Elijah’s remains showed evidence of traumatic head injuries that had partially healed and occurred at least several weeks before Elijah’s death.

The Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Elijah’s cause of death to be “homicide by unspecified means,” the complaint states.
