4 people acquitted of 2019 murder, court violates police for misconduct

Hyderabad: Ruling that police (investigating agency) failed to properly investigate the case and also failed to gather primary evidence, a city court recently ruled acquitted four people, including three women, involved in a murder case in 2019 in Shankarpally Cyberabad police station.
According to police, the three women involved in prostitutiontrapped the victim, a 23-year-old labourer, in a toddy shop in Shankarpally. When he denied their offer and refused to give them 2,000, the women, accompanied by their associate, followed him outside the wine store and killed him, stole the money and dumped the body on the bank of a nearby canal before fleeing, police said.
During the trial, the court emphasized that the police did not inquire with anyone around the crime scene and did not produce any evidence to support these allegations.
Although the police claimed that the accused had confessed to killing the victim, the court emphasized: “Confessions made by a person while in the custody of the police are not admissible.”
The court further pointed out that the investigating agency failed to gather primary evidence by not questioning anyone in the wine shop. “Moreover, the footage from the CCTV cameras, if any, of the wine shop was also not collected,” the court said.
Initially, when the body was found at the scene in February 2015, the identity of the victim was not known because his face had been disfigured to avoid identification. Based on clues, the police identified the victim, arrested the accused and remanded them to judicial custody. They were later released on bail and the case went to trial.
During the trial, the court examined seven witnesses, nine exhibits and six material objects related to the crime and found the defendants not guilty, thereby freeing them.
