Volunteer drivers needed for community minibuses

A call has been launched for volunteers to drive community minibuses across East Yorkshire.

The scheme provides transport for the elderly and people with disabilities as well as people in rural areas to get around and to their appointments.

Drivers are needed for three transport groups in Beverley, Goole and Holderness.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is offering potential volunteers an induction session in Beverley next month.

Fiona Wales, director of Beverley Community Lift, said the service could not operate without “our wonderful volunteers”.

“Whether it’s a hospital appointment, a trip to the supermarket or a social outing,” she said.

“In return, our volunteers say that driving for us gives them a sense of satisfaction and pride, knowing that they are helping people maintain their independence and friendships.”

Doreen Worsnop, a regular user of the Beverley service, said getting out of the house “really cheers me up”.

“Living alone can be very lonely, so it’s comforting to know there are friendly people like me on the minibus,” she said.

“The volunteers and drivers are lovely and can be quite amusing.”

The induction session will take place at the Beverley Enterprise Center in Beckview Road on November 9.
