A Closer Look at the Timeline Leading Up to Jordanelle’s Road Rage Shooting

We take a closer look at the timeline leading up to the drive-by shooting and murder of Patrick Hayes at Jordanelle Reservoir.

A particular part of Hayes’ journey from Midvale to Hideout has caught the attention of investigators, and they need the public’s help.

If you were driving on a stretch of I-80 in Kimball Junction on the evening of September 25 and saw something, the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office wants to hear from you.

“We want help finding the individuals responsible,” Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby said.

Investigators are searching for someone in a Jeep Gladiator that shot Patrick Hayes in Hideout near the north entrance to Jordanelle Reservoir.

Police are monitoring part of Hayes’ trip from Midvale on September 25.

Investigators shared a timeline of Hayes’ trip that night, which they were able to analyze using cellphone data.

  • 10:30 p.m. – Patrick Hayes left his son’s house in Midvale on September 25
  • 10:37 p.m. – Cell phone data shows him driving in the Fort Union area. It turns east onto I-215.
  • 10:44 p.m. – He’s on I-80
  • 10:47 p.m. – He passes the Salt Lake County Shooting Range.
  • 10:54 p.m. – Data shows Hayes is on I-80 through Jeremy Ranch.
  • 10:58 p.m. – Approaching Kimble Junction.

“Now this is where we’re going to slow things down a little bit because we need the public’s help to understand some of this,” Rigby said.

Data shows Hayes was traveling at a normal speed as he approached the Kimball Junction Viaduct. As he passed under the overpass, he continued driving, but this time at a significantly slower pace. This leads the police to believe something happened here – they just don’t know what.

Hayes continued on to Hideout where he stopped at the north entrance to Jordanelle Reservoir.

PREVIOUS REPORTS:

Sheriff’s Office officials said security video showed Hayes getting out of his Volkswagen and approaching what appears to be a Jeep Gladiator. That’s when gunshots were heard in the footage.

Washed by the headlights, what we think is a Jeep drives away.

Hayes’ body was found the next morning, September 26, around 11 a.m.

Rigby said Hayes’ car appeared to have skid marks on the side from a possible tire.

Officials with the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said to call them to find out what happened if anyone has any information.

In the meantime, they are asking nearby businesses or residents if they have any images or information.
