Archival video shows Vancouver in 1986 during Expo 86

The panorama at the end shows an amazing comparison of what the city looked like back then.

The sights and sounds of Expo 86 disappeared from the city nearly 40 years ago, but they live on in this video featuring archival footage.

A boat patrols the offshore waters, people eat McDonalds and the historic Engine 374 honks its horn in the video shared by YouTube channel Floating Through the News.

Other scenes include the first version of the SkyTrain, Duncan’s recently removed giant hockey stick, and shots of Princess Diana and Prince (now King) Charles driving in front of a cheering crowd.

The five-and-a-half minute video also includes several shots of the streets and crowds gathered around the False Creek site.

It ends with a photo taken above False Creek, giving a stunning view of what the area looked like in 1986, providing an amazing comparative view with what currently exists in the area.

The footage also includes audio from the scenes (without any voiceover or music), allowing audio from the exhibits and exterior to pass through, giving a more immersive version of Expo 86 and allowing audio from the exhibits and from the outside. Conversations are also audible.

The footage appears to have been shot in B-roll during Expo 86; Floating through the News digitizes old, forgotten video footage from dead formats and posts it online.
