SunLive – Brigade celebrates 25 years with community event

From house, commercial building and brush fires to motor vehicle accidents to a parakeet stuck in a drain pipe, the Greerton Volunteer Fire Department has done it all in their brigade’s 25 years of service.

To celebrate this milestone and thank their community for their support, the Greerton Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a show and family story about their history in the parking lot behind Greerton RSA this Saturday, October 26.

Kerry Gordon, a senior member of the Greerton Volunteer Brigade, said the afternoon would be filled with family activities, entertainment, fire safety education and jibber-jabbering about firefighting.

The event will begin with the station’s fire trucks parading through Greerton at 1 p.m. to park in the parking lot behind Greerton RSA.

From 2 p.m., it’s action time: a variety of old and new fire trucks will be on display, activities for children, a sausage sizzle, fire safety demonstrations and firefighters will be on hand , sharing all their memorable captions.

Especially those of the three original members of the Greerton Volunteer Brigade – Aaron Moore, Melvern Wainwright and Steve Bolton – who are still on the list.

Gordon said the day was about thanking the community for their support as well as the three OGs “who are still serving 25 years later”.

“Public interaction with firefighters typically occurs during a disaster. So this is an opportunity to see the other side, ordinary people playing an extraordinary role,” Gordon said.

“This is the perfect opportunity to get the family together, look at the trucks, take a photo and even show your interest in becoming a volunteer or career firefighter.”

The fire safety demonstrations will also remind participants how to be fire safe at home – a crucial preventative measure to keep Greerton volunteers from having to get out of fire trucks.

“We have booked a kitchen fire demonstration, which will show what to do if a pan on the stove catches fire. We show them how to turn it off safely.

Gordon said they will also explain what to do if a fire gets too big or it’s not safe to put it out safely. “If the situation gets too big, get everyone out of the house and close the doors when you go out.”

That day, Greerton Volunteer Firefighters will also share their memorable stories, from cats stuck in trees to major local fires they’ve witnessed like Metal Man in Judea, or the fire on Matakana Island, or the The fire at the Good Local pub in Pyes. Pennsylvania. They can even tell the story of a few volunteers recently involved in a house fire that quickly changed and the roof collapsed on them, and survived to tell the tale.

Join them in celebrating 25 years of service as they thank the community for their support.
