Shih-Tzu’s Annoyance at Dad Kissing Mom Is Full of Stubborn Drama

Shih-Tzu’s Annoyance at Dad Kissing Mom Is Full of Stubborn Drama

Most dogs have a favorite human, and they can become very protective and loyal to them. Benji is a Shih-Tzu and his favorite person in the world is his mother. His replacement human, his father, loves mom as much as Benji, but the dog doesn’t like to have competition. This video they posted and shared in early October proves how Benji feels about sharing his mom.

The video begins with Benji cuddling up with his mother on the couch. Dad tries to snuggle up to them both while kissing Mom. Benji’s not a fan of this, and there’s a major side-eye afoot! Watch what happens when Mom finally asks Benji for a kiss.

It was so cute! Benji was beyond annoyed that his father/spare human was trying to love his mother! Benji’s sister Olive was watching from afar, probably just happy not to be part of the drama! Commenters also appreciated Benji’s sideways look. @Angel pointed out, “Maybe he’s upset he’s not getting kisses!” and Benji’s mom replied: “He doesn’t like kisses LOL!” @Candy shared: “Shih-Tzus are so stubborn and adorable!” @ptys made me laugh when they said, “Our Shih-Tzu is the best birth control, I swear! LOL!”

Do dogs get jealous?

It appears in this video that Benji is jealous of his father’s affection towards his mother. Can dogs be jealous? Well, that depends on who you ask. Another Pet Help article shares: “Some scientists believe that dogs are not capable of such delicate emotions. They consider jealousy an emotion exclusive to humans. Patricia McConnell, in her book For the love of a dogmakes a strong case for jealousy in dogs. Marc Hauser, in his book Wild Spiritsstates that dogs do not feel this type of emotion because they are not self-aware.”

How to know if your dog is jealous? There are signs that PetMD shares some of the signs,

  • Getting between you and another animal or person

  • Whining when paying attention to another animal or person

  • Bumping against your leg, pressing his body against you, or seeking proximity

  • Groaning when you give affection to another

  • Barking, trick-or-treating, or other attention-seeking behaviors

  • Going to the toilet indoors (or not on the pee pad if they use one indoors)

It may seem cute at first, but a dog’s jealous behavior can become a major problem. The number one rule is to not fuel your dog’s jealous behaviors. Make sure you establish strong communication and boundaries. If this doesn’t work, you may need to consult your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer to correct the behavior.
