Springfield teens charged with murder in connection with shooting of 17-year-old

A 15-year-old and a 17-year-old face murder charges in connection with the death of 17-year-old Dayquan Wiley.

On Aug. 4, Springfield police responded to a home in the 1800 block of 11th Street following a call of shots fired. Once on scene, police located Dayquan Wiley in a bedroom of the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transferred to St. John’s Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Seventeen-year-old Larryoun Taylor is charged as an adult and appeared in Sangamon County Court on Friday for arraignment after being indicted by a Sangamon County grand jury. Taylor is charged with first-degree murder and home invasion. He remains in detention. His next court appearance will be on November 12, 2024.

A fifteen-year-old minor is also charged with the murder of Dayquan Wiley. This juvenile was apprehended last week in Wisconsin by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and will be extradited to Sangamon County.

As this second suspect was only fifteen years old, he was initially charged with first degree murder and home invasion in juvenile court.

A motion will be filed to transfer him to adult court. Under Illinois law, until juveniles reach the age of sixteen, transfer to adult court is not automatic, but rather permissive and a motion for transfer must first be filed with the juvenile court. Then, after a hearing, the court will determine whether the transfer is appropriate and the case may then be transferred to adult court.

If the court finds that the transfer is not appropriate, the case will remain in juvenile court.
