Policewoman raped by neighbor while returning home to Karwa Chauth in Kanpur

A policewoman was allegedly raped by her neighbor after he was offered a ride on Saturday when she was returning home to celebrate Karwa Chauth in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, officials said on Monday.

Police said the accused, whom the woman knew, was arrested. The incident occurred when the man, after taking her on his motorbike, took her to a remote area in the Sen-Paschim Para area instead of her intended destination.

“The woman head constable, attached to the Reserve Police Lines in Ayodhya, had come to Kanpur on Saturday evening to celebrate the festival of ‘Karwa Chauth’. She was on her way to her village when she accepted a transport from her neighbor , Dharmendra Paswan, on his bike,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander said, news agency PTI reported.

“Instead of dropping her at her destination, Paswan allegedly took the woman to an isolated field and raped her,” Chander added.

Woman tried to call for help but there was no one nearby: ACP

Ghatampur Deputy Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ranjeet Kumar said the woman tried to call for help when Paswan tried to undress her, but there was no one nearby. “The victim bit off part of the accused’s finger after the attack and managed to escape,” he said.

Following the incident, the woman approached a nearby police station and reported the crime, leading to the prompt registration of an FIR. Police launched a search operation and apprehended the accused within a few hours, ACP Kumar added.

The case was filed at the Sen-Paschim Para police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 64 (rape), 76 (criminal force with intent to strip), 115 (2) (voluntarily inflicting hurt ), 117 (intentionally causing serious injury) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation). Police confirmed that the accused was produced in court and remanded in police custody for 14 days.
