A man charged in connection with a fatal 2021 car collision pleaded guilty Wednesday in New Hanover County Court.

Tyler Owen Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated death by vehicle, according to the New Hanover County Prosecutor’s Office. Smith was sentenced to 9 to 12 years.

“This sentence will run upon the expiration of the time he is currently serving for Brunswick County convictions for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and habitual (drunk driving),” Sam wrote Dooies, assistant district attorney, in an email. “He had about 600 days of credit in custody.”

Smith’s conviction is related to a fatal three-car collision that occurred nearly three years ago on Independence Boulevard. Police previously reported that Smith ran a red light while traveling north, hitting the side of a passenger vehicle turning south from the mall.

One victim, Karen Cramer, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Cramer’s vehicle was seriously injured, but was in stable condition immediately following the collision. The driver of a third vehicle involved in the collision was not seriously injured.

Smith underwent a field sobriety test, where he was taken into custody after showing signs of impairment. Initially, Smith faced charges of second-degree murder, felony aggravated death by motor vehicle, habitual DUI, driving while license revoked, DUI revocation and red light violation.
