Russia says it shot down more than 90 Ukrainian drones amid reports of air base strike

Russian forces shot down 92 Ukrainian drones launched on the night of October 10, the Russian Defense Ministry said, amid growing reports of successful strikes against Russian military targets.

The majority of the drones – 47 – were reportedly intercepted above Krasnodar Krai, in southwest Russia, where, just the day before, Ukraine reportedly struck a base housing 400 Shahed-type drones.

Local authorities in the Russian Republic of Adygea, an enclave of Krasnodar Krai, reported a drone attack “on the suburb of (the capital) Maykop by (Ukrainian) drones.”

Residents of the village of Rodnikovoye are reportedly being evacuated. There were no casualties and the resulting fire is being extinguished, Governor Murat Kumpilov said.

The governor’s statement comes shortly after the Russian channel Telegram Astra wrote that early in the morning of October 10, drones attacked the Khanskaya military airfield in the Republic of Adygea.

The airfield is located near the village of Khanskaya, close to the region’s capital, Maykop, and about 270 kilometers east of occupied Crimea. Khanskaya airfield is home to the Russian 272nd Training Aviation Regiment.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not mention any drones intercepted over the Republic of Adygea.

Andrii Kovalenko, a senior Ukrainian counter-disinformation official, claimed that a fuel depot was destroyed in a strike on the airfield, sharing purported images of smoke and fire rising near Maykop.

Twelve more drones were shot down in Kursk oblast, nine in Rostov oblast, four in Bryansk oblast, two in Belgorod oblast and one in Voronezh oblast, the Ministry of Defense said. Defense.

All of the regions mentioned above lie on the border between Russia and Ukraine and are often targets of cross-border attacks.

Fifteen other drones were reportedly shot down over the Sea of Azov and two over Russian-occupied Crimea.

The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify these claims.

Ukraine has carried out a number of strikes against air bases and other military installations in an effort to weaken Russia’s more powerful air force and limit Moscow’s ability to launch devastating air attacks against Ukrainian cities.

A Ukrainian drone strike set fire to a Russian weapons depot storing North Korean munitions in Bryansk Oblast, the Ukrainian General Staff reported on October 9.
