Ahmedabad: A 27-year-old woman from Naranpura has lodged a police complaint stating that unknown persons, posing as officers of central agencies, had extorted Rs 5 lakh from her by threatening legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The cybercriminals also allegedly forced the woman to undress in front of a webcam during her digital arrest.
According to the FIR filed with the Naranpura police, the victim, Hemali Pandya, who resides in Samarpan Tower on the 132-foot Ring Road, received a call on October 13 from a man claiming to be an employee of a retail company. messaging. He informed her that a package containing three laptops, two mobile phones, 150 grams of mephedrone and 1.5 kg of clothing had been sent to Thailand under his name. The caller asked Pandya to contact the cybercrime department immediately.
Soon after disconnecting the call to contact the cyber crime helpline, Pandya received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to be a Delhi Cyber ​​Crime officer. The officer informed Pandya that his name had cropped up during an investigation into a narcotics case and asked him to join a video conference. She then received messages containing allegedly forged letters from Delhi Cyber ​​Crime and the CBI naming her as a suspect in a drug smuggling and money laundering case.
A frightened Pandya joined the video call, during which a man posing as a CBI officer, without showing his face, allegedly forced her to undress to reveal all her birthmarks. Despite her initial refusal, she complied after being threatened with imprisonment. She mentioned in the FIR that she was forced to undress in the presence of a policewoman.
Pandya said she was forced to transfer all the money she had, around Rs 4.92 lakh, to accounts provided by the cyber fraudsters. When she confided in her neighbor about the incident, he called one of the accused, who admitted: “This woman was a victim of cyber fraud, so please take care of her. » The scammer ended the call and all the numbers he was using were deactivated.
The Naranpura police have booked the unknown accused under various sections of the NBS for producing fake documents as genuine, forgery, cheating, extortion, impersonation of a public servant and criminal conspiracy.
