Violent accident kills 1 in Opelika

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) – A 44-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash that occurred near Lafayette Parkway in Opelika Wednesday evening.

According to the Opelika Police Department, authorities received a call about a single-vehicle crash near the 3200 block of Lafayette Parkway in Opelika around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday evening. OPD says they responded to the call and when they arrived, they saw a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. In an attempt to contain the flames, Opelika Fire firefighters used a fire extinguisher.

After the fire was extinguished, authorities discovered an unconscious man inside the vehicle. The 44-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the victim was heading north on Lafayette Parkway when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
