Schiff and 133 members of Congress urge Amazon to respect workers’ rights

October 23, 2024

Washington, D.C.— Yesterday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) joined Congressional Labor Caucus co-chairs Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), Donald Norcross (D-N.J.), Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) and other members of Congress by calling on Amazon to respect the right of its employees to unionize. The letter, signed by 133 members of Congress, urges Amazon to cease its anti-union activities and ensure that workers can organize freely without intimidation or retaliation.

“Workers have the constitutional right to organize and advocate for improvements in their wages and working conditions, as well as the statutory right to engage in concerted activity protected under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA)”, the members wrote in a letter to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.

“We have heard the concerns of our constituents who are afraid to exercise these rights for fear of retaliation from their employers, and the anti-union activities of a large employer like Amazon exacerbate these concerns. » »continued the deputies. “Therefore, consistent with the NLRA, we urge Amazon to refrain from intimidation, retaliation, and other forms of unlawful interference and to allow workers to decide for themselves whether to join a union. »

Unfortunately, Amazon has been found to have violated federal labor laws on numerous occasions, including anti-union public comments from CEO Andy Jassy. This letter comes amid a recent wave of worker organizing activity at Amazon sites across the country. To ensure that workers’ rights are respected in the future, members requested information from Amazon and asked whether the company would commit to complying with applicable federal and state labor laws.

The letter was also signed by Reps.
