‘It was very scary’: Florida-based mother explains storm-related stress and anxiety

“I’m glad we stayed…but it was very scary to experience that.”

These are the words of Summerna Khan, a Florida resident and mother of four, who chose to stay home last night when Hurricane Milton hit.

She told Sky News this afternoon that she renovated her home last year, adding storm-proof features like a metal roof and reinforced windows, beyond what is required by her area .

“We went to a safe place downstairs and that’s where we stayed all night,” she said.

“I don’t want to run away every time with four kids, but it’s a challenge.”

The family doesn’t live in a flood zone, but their area is exposed to high winds, she said.

Trees have taken over the roofs of five different houses in his neighborhood. One had a metal roof, but the others had gaping holes in their ceilings.

Despite his precautions and the circumstances that prevent him from easily leaving, this experience takes its toll every time a hurricane hits.

Ms Khan said: “I can’t explain the level of stress and anxiety.

“It’s very strong, the wind howls, the rain doesn’t stop.

“At one point my daughter was looking out the window and she kept saying ‘Mom, I see blue lightning’. I didn’t understand what it was until I realized it was the electrical transformers.”

She added that her neighbors were also frightened and sheltering in their homes.

Boil water advisories have been issued as the region deals with the aftermath.

Usually, power is restored within 24 hours – but this time it is unclear when services will be restored, Ms Khan added.
