Outrage over exorbitant volunteer fees for 2025 Ryder Cup in New York

Outrage over exorbitant volunteer fees for 2025 Ryder Cup in New York

The 2025 Ryder Cup is still more than ten months away, but the tournament is already facing controversy after controversy, this coming week when the PGA of America revealed the absurd price it plans to charge people to play volunteering.

Following Europe’s victory in Rome last year, the biannual tournament returns to the United States, with Bethpage State Park on Long Island hosting the clash between the best from Europe and the United States.

That said, the tournament has already come under heavy criticism due to the exorbitant price punters will pay to see their favorite golfers in action.

Last week, the PGA of America set entry ticket prices at $750, making it the most expensive entry price in history for a golf tournament.

While the standard entry fee itself has attracted criticism, the PGA of America capped a controversial week by revealing that those looking to volunteer for the competition next September will have to pay a whopping $392 fee to their problems.

The extraordinary demand placed on golf courses during professional tournaments means that recruiting volunteers who can enjoy golf while helping out is at the heart of organizing any event.

While until recently volunteers traded their time and labor for free access and equipment, recent years have seen an increase in events charging volunteers for equipment and the cost of facilities. However, these fees have rarely been subject to large-scale increases in the same way as general access.

Until this week, of course, when the PGA of America priced the stand at eighty dollars more than the most expensive volunteer experience and a hundred dollars more than the U.S. Open.

The $392 fee will provide volunteers with access, a uniform, a drawstring bag, food (during shifts) and a commemorative pin.

Despite the fact that the fees will have little effect on Irish golf fans in 2025, they will be praying that such fees are not imposed for the 2027 Ryder Cup when Adare Manor in Limerick hosts the competition.
