Arma 4 will be released in 2027

Bohemia Interactive has announced that Arma 4, the next big installment in its shooting simulation series, will be released in 2027. The announcement came at the end of Bohemia’s 25th anniversary concert, alongside disturbing gun-less footage from a coastal promontory with undulations. ocean waters against a cloudy sky – reminds me more of The Elder Scrolls 6 announcement teaser than any tactical mili-banger. Maybe they’re secretly creating an open-world walking simulator? Just kidding, kidding. Please put the chair down.

Bohemia revealed Arma 4 in 2022, telling CJ (RPS in Peace) that the interim Arma Reforger would serve as a sort of bridge or testing ground: it allowed Arma modders to experiment with the Enfusion engine of the developer and equipped the Arma 4 developers with data and player feedback. Reforger left Early Access in November 2023, with the final update adding features such as a totally overhauled supply system and something approximating fast travel.

If you’re new to Arma, it’s one of the most realistic simulations on the store – so much so that the US military used the Arma games for training, and the developers of Bohemia were once arrested by Greek police for taking search photos of military installations. Bohemia even had its own division for a time dedicated to running test simulations – eventually named Bohemia Interactive Simulations, it was sold in 2013 and became a standalone business entity that uses the same engine technology. Bohemia’s love of realism also led nefarious parties to attempt to pass off images from the Arma games as real war photographs.

Aside from hi-fi battlefield recreations, Bohemia is also the developer of the legendary DayZ, a massive Arma mod taking the form of an open-world zombie survival experience, which entered Early Access in 2013. I never had much interest in Arma, but DayZ’s obsessively in-depth injury systems spawned some of my favorite video game travel writing, like the story of Dr. Wasteland. Maybe I’ll try to get into Arma: Reforger properly as Arma 4 approaches. It’s not like there’s a rush.
