After Survivor Deals With A Unique First, Jeff Probst Explains Why He Negotiated With The Season 47 Team

While Survivor is in his 47^th season on the 2024 TV schedule, the series continues to push the limits. The franchise has been around for over two decades with no end in sight, and with numerous international spinoffs that American competitors even compete on, and the series still manages to pull off a few firsts from time to time. Changes to Survivor occur occasionally to freshen things up for the long-running reality series, and a one-off premiere had host Jeff Probst negotiating with the Season 47 crew.

The final episode saw an immunity challenge, bringing quite a unique challenge, when the Gata tribe brought in the three chickens they had won earlier as they weren’t laying many eggs. Some members of the tribe wanted to kill and eat them, like Sam, but the girls on the team were against it, like Sierra. So they brought them back in the hope of trading them for eggs. There was some back and forth until a deal was made for 18 eggs in exchange. Via Weekly EntertainmentProbst shared on his On fire podcast about what happened and how he was even surprised by the turn of events:

This surprised me as no one has ever returned chickens. It was a shock. But it’s a great reminder of why each season of Survivor is unique because of group dynamics. You have people from very different backgrounds, different approaches to life, different value systems, different priorities. You can never predict what will happen in a given situation when multiple people have different opinions.

This proves once again how unpredictable he is. Survivor can be and how different each season is, aside from the different locations and different casts. You never really know how a challenge or battle will play out, even if it has been done before. That being said, that doesn’t necessarily mean it was easy, especially since it had never happened before. Not to mention that 18 eggs seemed way too generous. Probst explained the negotiation and why he made the deal:

For me, the process of thinking through a negotiation is really quite simple. I just wondered: If I’m at home watching right now and I’m doing my best to be objectively fair in this moment, in the spirit of Survivor, is this offer fair, and not just for this tribe. but for the other tribe(s) too? And the question that always comes to mind is: will we set a precedent that could come back to haunt us? So you make that decision in real time. I felt that the deal we made was fair and in keeping with the spirit of the game, because I saw it like this: these chickens are an asset that the tribe has earned, and they decided: “We we have no use for it.” .’ Well, it’s still an asset, so it still has some value in terms of negotiation, and I felt that the meat asset, chickens, was quite valuable, and their request for eggs seemed fair . So we made a deal.

Although trading the chickens seems to defeat the original purpose of receiving them since they are such an asset, it makes sense that Probst would think that trading for something so valuable would be helpful. Unfortunately, Gata didn’t really understand the value of a good craft since they couldn’t even cook the eggs. They lost the challenge and did not light the fire before the left and had to give their flint to Probst.

This is just further proof that Survivor is really unpredictable. Even if a negotiation and exchange seems good in the moment, that is not always the case. Of course, it also depends on what happens before and after a challenge. It makes the show even more entertaining, so that’s a plus.

It should be fun to see what’s next for the tribes and what challenges they’ll encounter next. Nothing is easy Survivorlike missing Applebee’s, but it’s certainly entertaining television.
