PCG apprehends three bancas for illegal “galadgad” activities

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Sunday it apprehended three fishing bancas carrying out unauthorized trawling or “galadgad” fishing activities in the waters between Masbate and Iloilo.

According to the PCG, the bancas were apprehended in municipal waters between Balud, Masbate and Gigantes Island, Iloilo, during joint maritime operations with the Bureau’s Fisheries Protection and Law Enforcement Group (FPLEG). Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). 9, 2024.

The coast guard said the trawls violated several sections of the 1998 Philippine Fisheries Code regarding unauthorized fishing or engaging in other unauthorized fishing activities, employment of unlicensed fish workers, fishing equipment without a license and other violations.

The total administrative penalty for the listed violations is estimated at P728,000.

“This underscores the PCG and BFAR’s commitment to safeguarding marine ecosystems, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and ensuring the livelihoods of artisanal fishermen,” Coast Guard District Bicol said. —Jon Viktor Cabuenas/RF, GMA Integrated News
