15 candidates for Grand Forks police chief are screened to determine finalists, city human resources director says – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS — A nationwide search attracted 15 candidates for the position of Grand Forks police chief, who are now being screened to determine finalists, according to the city’s human resources director.

We hope the finalists will be determined in the next nine days and the interview process should take place in mid-November, Tangee Bouvette told the Herald. No further information will be available about the applicants — such as how many are internal or external — until they become finalists, she said.

In the meantime, Lt. Dwight Love was named acting chief. He has been with the Grand Forks Police Department for 31 years and is its longest serving lieutenant.

Chief Mark Nelson, who served as chief for a decade and worked for the agency for 36 years, retired at the end of September.

Applications for police chief can come from anywhere in the country. When Nelson was selected to become chief in 2014, there were four finalists – he was one of two internal candidates. The other two were a Fargo-based captain and a Chicago Police Department lieutenant, he said.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under the byline “staff.” Often, the byline “personnel” is used when rewriting basic informational documents that come from official sources, such as a city press release regarding a road closure, and that require little or no reporting. Sometimes this byline is used when a news story includes many authors or when the news story is formed by aggregating previously reported information from various sources. If outside sources are used, this is noted in the story.
