Voices for social justice: Bhumi Pednekar, driving change through cinema, activism and advocacy

Bhumi Pednekar, actress and national advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, spoke about her journey to make a difference in the world at News18 SheShakti 2024. She believes that change begins when you recognize that there is a problem and that it is the younger generation who are truly the torchbearers who make us aware that climate change, among other things, is very real and that we are all facing it.

Speaking about her Bhumi Foundation, Bhumi said, “I really feel that the more successful I am, the more I have to give back. I think that’s my goal. She wants to extend her voice to as many vulnerable communities and individuals under one roof.

She also supports green businesses because she believes they will help us reduce the effects of climate change and preserve our environment. Bhumi also speaks on topics like women’s rights, girls’ education, menstrual hygiene in real and real life. She emphasizes that it is a necessity of the moment and that cinema is a very powerful medium which has helped her to highlight these issues.

Talking about her journey in the film industry and the stereotypes about how actresses look on screen, she said, “I have been lucky enough to play different roles with a lot of acceptance. I’m doing my part, the role has evolved but we have a long way to go and this change will only happen when audiences support films and storylines led by female characters.

She has maintained a delicate balance between acting, activism and entrepreneurship and for this, she gives all the credit to her mother and sister. “My family keeps me extremely grounded. They keep me centered. I am very lucky to have these two wonderful women who inspire me every day. she said.

When asked what advice she would like to give to women aspiring to enter the industry, she said, “When I wanted to become an actress, my family was completely against it. I’m the kind of actor who fought at home and came here. So to all the young aspiring actors, to everyone who wants to join the creative forces, there will be a lot of people who will constantly try to pull you back, but somewhere you have to find that strength within yourself and follow your path, and never give up.”
