Westinghouse extends AP1000 reactor contract in Bulgaria

Westinghouse Electric has extended its agreement with Bulgaria’s Kozloduy-Newbuild Nuclear Power Plant for the construction of two new AP1000 reactors at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) site.

This extension of the initial engineering and design contract is essential for the advancement of the project, which includes nuclear fuel diversification and operational support at Kozloduy.

Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant began its partnership with Westinghouse in June 2023 with a first initial engineering design contract, aimed at evaluating the Kozloduy site infrastructure for the deployment of two AP1000 reactors.

Once this phase is complete, the project will move into engineering services, including design, licensing, training, project management and site planning prior to construction.

In early 2024, Westinghouse delivered and reloaded the first VVER-1000 fuel into Unit 5 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant under a ten-year supply contract.

Features of the AP1000 reactor include fully passive safety systems, modular construction and the smallest footprint per MW on the market.

In China, four AP1000 reactors are setting operational performance records, with eight more under construction and four more under contract. The Vogtle site in Georgia, USA also has two AP1000 units in operation.

The technology has also been chosen for nuclear power programs in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, with considerations in Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, India and North America.

18 units based on AP1000 technology will be in service worldwide by 2030.

Westinghouse Energy Systems President Dan Lipman said: “Westinghouse is committed to the Kozloduy project and to strengthening and leveraging the Bulgarian supply chain to support this critical project for the Balkans and others to across Europe.

“We appreciate the close collaboration with the Kozloduy-Newbuild NPP and look forward to taking the next important steps towards Bulgaria’s energy security.”

In September 2024, Westinghouse Electric partnered with Hyundai Engineering & Construction to explore nuclear power plant opportunities in Sweden and Finland.
