Former Homewood CFO pleads guilty to wire fraud

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Former Homewood Chief Financial Officer Robert Burgett formally pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday, Oct. 23, to three counts of wire fraud.

The plea agreement was first announced in August 2024.

Robert Winston Burgett, 64, has agreed to plead guilty to crimes related to the embezzlement of nearly $950,000 from the city of Homewood, according to officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI.

According to federal district court documents, Burgett was charged with three counts of wire fraud.

According to the indictment and plea agreement, when Burgett worked for the city of Homewood between at least May 2023 and March 2024, authorities say he used the position to embezzle nearly $950,000 from the accounts city ​​banks for personal purposes.

Documents indicate Burgett altered city bank account statements and made false entries in city accounting records.
