Grand Junction Recreation Center final design update at $82.1

Grand Junction Recreation Center final design update at .1

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – The construction manager and architect responsible for building the new Grand Junction Recreation Center presented the guaranteed maximum price to an advisory committee.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommended that the final price and design be submitted to the City Council for approval on November 7.

“This was the culmination of a tremendous effort and a very important milestone given that we are within budget for the recreation center,” said Ken Sherbenou, parks and recreation director for the City of Grand Junction.

The final price for the 108,000-square-foot building is $82.1 million. It’s funded by cannabis tax money and an additional 0.14 percent sales tax approved by voters last year.

The budget further allocates $700,000 for art inside and outside the building. The city will be looking for local artists to take on this project.

“Everything about the facility has been reviewed to ensure it is as accessible as possible…some of the varieties we see in terms of desk heights, door widths and walkways all have to do with the “to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible,” said Craig Bouck, strategic partner for Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture.

“It’s the basis of public leisure. It’s all about community. It’s about serving as many people as possible,” added Sherbenou.

The recreation center will feature multiple pools, including a 13-foot-deep pool, a climbing wall, party rooms and more. Its opening is scheduled for mid-2026.
