Dedicated gardener spends night pumping flooded land in Hereford

A dedicated volunteer groundskeeper for a non-league football club has camped out on their flooded pitch to prepare it for an upcoming match.

Joe Mecke-Davis spent Monday evening filling the fuel pumps every half hour, to keep them running long enough to clear floodwaters from the Westfields FC ground in Hereford.

Mr Mecke-Davis said he had to do everything he could ahead of the game against Mangotsfield United on Saturday.

“I set this goal for myself,” he said, “if it meant staying here a long, long time (Monday night), then that’s what I had to do.”
