Home invasion suspect arrested after hitting police car and officer

BARRE, Vt. (myCV) – A wanted 34-year-old Vermont man was arrested after leading police on a vehicle chase and hitting an officer Tuesday evening.

Barre City police attempted to stop the vehicle driven by John Balch, of Warren, near Route 62 around 11:30 p.m. Balch then led officers on a chase, got stuck on a dead end street and was allegedly “pushed” against a police officer. cruiser. A police officer outside his vehicle was also struck and was treated at Central Vermont Medical Center.

The suspect was taken into custody after attempting to flee on foot.

Balch was wanted for a July 2023 home invasion in Berlin and had a $20,000 warrant out for his arrest. He was held at the Northeast Correctional Center until his arraignment on October 23. The charges against Balch include resisting arrest, negligent operation and more.

The police investigation is ongoing.
