Charges against MP Cong Masood in decade-old 'hate speech' case

Meerut: Special court formally framed charges against Congress MLA Imran Massoud over a 10-year-old speech in which he threatened violence during the 2014 election. Lok Sabha elections. The case was initially filed by Kusumveer Singh, then in-charge of Deoband police station, on March 27, 2014, accusing Masood of violating the model code of conduct, attempting to incite agitation and using caste remarks against scheduled caste legislators. Masood was subsequently imprisoned and his speech sparked widespread political debate. The case also went viral on social media at the time, adding fuel to the controversy.
Masood has now been formally charged under several sections of the IPC, including 295A (hurting religious feelings), 504 (provoking breach of peace), 153A (promoting enmity based on religion), 506 (criminal intimidation), as well as under the SC/ST. Law and Article 125 of the Representation of the People Law. Attorney General Gulab Singh is representing the case and the trial will be held before the special MP/MLA court.
Responding to the accusations, Masood told TOI: “This case has been politically motivated from the beginning and is technically wrong. The indictment was filed after 10 years and required procedures were not followed. I have complete confidence in the judiciary. “Masood is among the six Congress MLAs elected from Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
