13-year-old girl found dead in Powell, 15-year-old boy arrested

The body of a 13-year-old girl was found on a Powell trail on the afternoon of October 22 and a 15-year-old boy was arrested by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Their identities have not been released and the sheriff said the department is continuing to investigate what happened.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 4:45 p.m. regarding a body on the trail in the Broadacres subdivision. Around 9 p.m., detectives arrested a 15-year-old suspect.

The boy was charged with second-degree murder, Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler said at an Oct. 22 news conference.

“Because of this active investigation, detectives are still looking for leads that we need to pursue or follow up on,” Spangler said.

Spangler asked the community to pray for the family and give them space to heal,

“No one expects it, but to have someone show up unexpectedly at your door and tell you something so tragic, it’s not only hard for that family but also for the people who go there ” Spangler said. “Again, my thoughts and prayers certainly go out to this family.”
