Anger flares: chaos and controversy at Waqf Bill meeting

In an unexpected turn of events, tensions flared during a meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, amid a dispute between TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay became explosive. Reports say that Banerjee allegedly smashed a glass bottle during the heated argument, leading to a chaotic atmosphere.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam deputy general secretary A Raja expressed his disapproval, terming the event unpleasant. He criticized the disclosure of details of the meeting, stressing that the proceedings were confidential. On social media, Raja expressed concerns over the president’s handling of the meeting, suggesting doubts about ensuring justice due to the rapid conduct.

The meeting, attended by eminent persons such as retired judges and Supreme Court lawyers, was adjourned following the disturbances. Banerjee, who was reportedly injured in the incident, was suspended for a day following a close vote and later received medical treatment. The Waqf Bill proposes major reforms such as digitization of records and transparency improvements to address ownership issues.
