Prosecutor clears 3 Iowa police officers in fatal shooting after traffic stop

DES MOINES, Iowa — A county prosecutor on Monday cleared three Iowa police officers in a fatal early-morning shooting in September of a man who shot at two officers after a traffic stop.

Polk County Attorney Kimberly Graham said her review of the Sept. 16 shooting in Des Moines found that officers were justified in the shooting of 37-year-old Joshua Green. She reviewed the dashcam and body camera footage.

The two officers who were shot survived and were released from the hospital.

Officers stopped a car driven by Green around 1:40 a.m. for an equipment violation. He then briefly drove away before hitting a truck. More officers arrived and as they attempted to subdue Green with a Taser and remove him from his car, Graham said he “pulled out a handgun and started shooting upwards, toward police officers.”

Three officers then fired their weapons at Green, who was killed.
