Hyderabad: Driven by the need to prevent rising cases of self-harm among adolescents, two youths from Hyderabad have developed a unique mobile application, ‘Adaraa’, to serve as an emotional support center for adolescents.

The duo of Sreya Jampana and Hasini Kolla describe Adaraa as much more than just technology. “It’s a lifeline, offering practical help and encouragement to teenagers to prevent self-harm and support their mental wellbeing during vulnerable moments. With a holistic approach, Adaraa empowers adolescents and promotes mental health through various features,” says Sreya.

Imagine someone facing the aftermath of a difficult day at school, where bullying and negative thoughts overwhelm them. “They turn to their phones for relief and open Adaraa, our app, which offers them a lifeline. Whether it is an expression journal or engaging games to entertain their minds, Adaraa serves as a support center, reminding them that they are not alone,” says Sreya, a Class XII student of Sreenidhi International School.

The young people collaborated with software developers to create the feature-rich Adaraa mobile application and participated in the prestigious Technovation innovation challenge. “Our mobile app, which is expected to be launched in the coming months, has also been selected among the top 3 apps by teenagers in India. Our Adaraa app was one of the 5 teams selected in India by Technovation,” explains Sreya.

Speaking further about the origin of the app that supports mental health just for teenagers, Sreya says, “Adaraa was born out of a deeply personal motivation, witnessing the silent struggles of teenagers amid a worrying rise in rates of suicide. Realizing that most mental health platforms weren’t effectively reaching out to teens, I took it upon myself to create something that could.

Starting with the idea of a simple app, Sreya and Hasini managed to take it further by developing it into a mental health organization for adolescents.

“In person, teens tend to be hesitant to talk about their mental health. That’s why I thought of reaching out through this app. Adaraa now offers specialist wellbeing sessions within schools, equipping students with the knowledge and tools to help each other. Peer-to-peer guidance has been at the heart of Adaraa’s mission, empowering teens to actively participate in their own mental health journey,” she says.

Some of the unique features that are part of Adaraa are guided daily journaling, self-harm tracking, personalized positive affirmations, 24/7 live support, which will be offered by professional therapists in a future close, stimulating games and guided meditation videos.
