Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday appealed to junior doctors, through chief secretary Manoj Pant’s mobile phone, to withdraw their rapid unto death agitation in support of their demands over rape and Horrible murder of a young female doctor. from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Pant, accompanied by Home Minister Nandini Chakraborty and Deputy Commissioner of Calcutta Police, Central Division, Indira Mukherjee, suddenly appeared on the dais of the hunger strike of seven young doctors on the ‘Esplanade, in central Calcutta.

There, the chief secretary contacted the chief minister on her mobile phone and she made her appeal to the protesting young doctors through her loudspeaker.

“I ask you to stop the hunger strike. Please come to the discussions. Most of your demands have already been met. Please give me three to four months. I will organize elections for different boards in all medical colleges and hospitals Please withdraw the hunger strike,” Banerjee said.

On the junior doctors’ demand to remove Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam, she said if all key officials of a crucial department were moved at once, then there would be administrative difficulties.

“We have already removed the Calcutta Police Commissioner and a few other officials,” the chief minister pointed out.

She said ordinary people feel helpless if they do not receive medical services in public hospitals. “I am in favor of humanity. I also want justice. But at the same time, it will be necessary to guarantee the treatment reserved for ordinary people. I therefore ask you again to stop your hunger strike and return to work,” she added.

Moreover, it was only on Friday evening that the young doctors warned the state government to resume the total work stoppage from next Tuesday, unless their outstanding demands are met. The CM’s appeal comes as the rapid-to-death protest by a group of young doctors against the gruesome rape and murder of their colleague at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital entered the 15th day.

Meanwhile, a mega rally from the victim young doctor’s residence at Panihati in North 24 Parganas district to the Esplanade, the venue of young doctors’ continuing protests in favor of fasting unto death, will also be held SATURDAY.
