Patricio Rodriguez-Hayes, second pedestrian struck, killed in Elmont, Baldwin, police say

Incidents involving motor vehicles in Baldwin and Elmont left two pedestrians dead in two days, Nassau County police said.

Around 6:20 a.m. Friday, a 59-year-old man was driving a 2019 cargo truck north on Coes Neck Road near Notre Dame Court in Baldwin, Nassau police said in a news release. When the driver swerved to avoid a car backing into the roadway, police said the truck struck a 44-year-old man who was walking along the shoulder of the road. The driver waited at the scene for first responders to arrive.

Police said the pedestrian suffered severe head trauma and was unconscious at the scene. When a Nassau County police medic arrived, he found the man deceased. Authorities did not identify the victim Friday evening and said an investigation was ongoing.

Around 4:40 a.m. Sunday, Patricio Rodriguez-Hayes, 48, of Queens Village was crossing Hempstead Turnpike at Elmont Road when he was struck by a sedan, Nassau police said. The sedan left the scene heading west on the Turnpike, authorities said.

Rodriguez-Hayes was transported to a hospital where he remained in critical condition for about four and a half days, authorities said. A doctor at the hospital pronounced him dead at 8 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Nassau detectives are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.
