HMNZS Manawanui clean-up suspended for Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting

Work to prevent widespread pollution caused by the sunken navy ship Manawanui in Samoa will be scaled back when Commonwealth heads of government meet next week.

Recovery operations for the ship’s three containers stranded on the reef in waters south of Upolu were expected to begin today, weather conditions permitting.

Two were empty and the other contained about three tons of food.

They will be launched and towed to shore.
