Edmonton cyclist hospitalized after robbery

Edmonton police are looking for witnesses or video footage of a robbery that left a man in hospital last month.

On September 20, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers responded to a suspected theft at 63rd Avenue and Gateway Boulevard at 1:30 p.m.

Police said in a news release Thursday that a 59-year-old man was riding his bicycle eastbound on 63rd Avenue, under the railroad bridge east of Gateway Boulevard.

Another man on foot allegedly pushed the cyclist onto the road, where he stole the victim’s bike and fled the scene heading west.

Passersby stopped to help the injured man and called 9-1-1. Emergency services transported the victim to hospital as his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police said they were informed on October 8 that the man’s injuries were “more serious than initially thought and could have long-term consequences.” He has since been released from hospital.

The EPS is looking for a white man in his twenties. He was carrying a brown backpack. The bike he stole is a spray-painted black Trek bike that was originally silver. It features a front suspension fork with front and rear mesh baskets.

Anyone with information or video footage of the theft is asked to contact EPS at 780-423-4567 or dial #377 from mobile.
