Scoliosis is a spinal condition that primarily affects preteens and teens. This occurs when the spine bends laterally or laterally to form a C- or S-shaped curvature (middle portion) and a lumbosacral spine (lower portion). The second most common cause is malformation of the bones of the spine since birth (congenital). Scoliosis does not usually cause pain and is usually first noticed by parents due to asymmetry in the shoulders, pelvis, or chest.

If a child suffers from scoliosis, one can look for the following symptoms:-

  1. One shoulder or hip may appear higher than the other.
  2. The child’s head is not in the center of his body.
  3. One side of the waist may be flat.
  4. The child’s back or ribs are uneven.

In India

2 to 3% of the population, mainly children and adolescents, suffer from scoliosis. To determine if your child needs to be taken to the doctor, check if your child has a curved spine, if anything seems uneven, if clothes don’t fit curves properly, and if your child suffers from constant back pain. Suppose they are diagnosed with scoliosis. In this case, there are three main approaches to treating it: observation, using an orthopedic device to support the back, or surgery, depending on the severity of the disease.

Apart from scoliosis

Kyphosis is another spinal condition that can affect children or adolescents. Kyphosis is an exaggerated forward curvature of the spine that leads to a hunched appearance. In some cases, scoliosis and kyphosis can coexist, leading to kyphoscoliosis.

A person may face such spinal problems due to various factors such as:

  1. Family history of scoliosis or any other spinal condition
  2. Born with spinal defects
  3. Neuromuscular conditions
  4. Metabolic Conditions Affecting Bone
  5. Neurological or genetic syndromes

Various diagnostic tests are used to detect spinal problems

If a child has symptoms related to a spinal disease, many tests are performed to diagnose the nature and severity of the problem, which helps in taking the desired action. Tests may include x-rays, blood tests, ultrasound scans, bone scans, lung function tests, computed tomography tests (CT scans), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Conclusion

It is advisable to consult a spinal specialist if your child suffers from any of the deformities mentioned above. It would be best never to see it, as it could progress to a serious deformity, leading to disability and morbidity later in life. To promote a quality lifestyle for your child, you must always address their concerns and ensure that their illness is not ignored.
