Writing for Rights 2024: Get Started

Writing for Rights 2024: Get Started

A few words are very useful for all of us. They can make us feel seen, supported and safe.

Together, a few words can become a chorus of solidarity for those whose rights are being violated. And solidarity can lead to real change – protection, justice, even freedom.

As an Amnesty International UK supporter and human rights campaigner, you play a vital role in this change.

So whether you flood the inboxes of the people who have the power to free these cases, or join us in writing a letter to show your support, your message sends a message.

Your message could make all the difference.

Where to start?

There are different ways to support the campaign. You’ve come to the right place to hit send!

Get the campaign booklet

First things first: meet the people featured in this year’s campaign. If you watch nothing else, you need to download our campaign booklet!

It takes you through each case and explains how you can write to them and how to write to the authorities on their behalf. This is your golden resource for Write For Rights.

Three ways to participate in Write For Rights

1. Write an appeal letter

In a world of petitions, physical publication stands out! In addition to writing to people who are victims of human rights violations, we also ask you to write to the authorities who can bring them justice.

All the details for writing to the authorities can be found in our campaign booklet.

You can also take action online here.

2. Write a message of solidarity

This is where Write For Rights began: writing to people who are unjustly punished, to show them that they are not alone.

Order this year’s booklet to find everything you need to learn about someone’s case and write and send them a letter.

3. Host an event

You can choose to host an event and inspire others to take action with you. Whether it’s a bake sale at your local (sports) club or an afternoon of coffee and tea while writing letters, drinks or family quizzes. Organize an event and invite your family and friends to take action on behalf of those at risk. Check out our tips for hosting a successful Write for Rights online event.

We’ve also developed an activism booklet that will help you with tips on how to organize events, includes a press release template for your local media outlets, and has more information on how to stay involved beyond to Write for Rights.

Do you prefer to stay online?

If writing letters isn’t for you, you can also take action online from November 1.

Tell us how we did it

Knowing how many people participated in the campaign and in which cases shows us whether our tactics are working or need to be adapted. This also allows us to provide updates on developments in an individual’s situation.
